The Artwork Creator – One of a kind?

The Artwork Creator

When we built it there was nothing like it around. Some big company had done an online imaging tool, but it was complex and they probably had something like 50 times the resources and budget that we had.

The Artwork Creator is a simple online tool that allows users to create artwork online, with no software and only basic internet skills. It was developed for Duplication Centre’s customers who didn’t want to commission a professional designer to create their artwork, and didn’t have professional software to do it themselves or didn’t have the skills to use it. Such customers had a software gap that the Artwork Creator filled. Unlike other companies design “wizards”, the Artwork Creator works like a proper design app with a workspace and selection of tools. Try it!

The Virtual Team Concept

Virtual TeamsThe Virtual Team concept developed from recent advances in technology, the internet and telecommunications, which allowed for advances in business practises and brought about Virtual models. The concept addresses problems of global competition and excessive travel expenses. Growth in the concept has been encouraged by Policy & Planning Guidance (used by councils to grant permission for new developments) which means that a business is more likely to find a location if it adopts these concepts.

Ad Finem exploit other benefits of the concept; collaboration of specialist skills and minimising the cost of operating projects. A large network of associates and professional developers allows us to quickly form a skilled team perfectly designed to undertake the project in hand. Cost is minimised as the company does not need to permanently employ the professionals.

The primary worry of using the Virtual Team concept is quality:

  • The team is managed centrally from the London office using Virtual Team Collaboration technology (other systems are utilised such as the renowned Mantis for bug tracking)
  • Team membership is relatively stable, with teams being frequently re-established for subsequent projects
  • Crucial aspects of the project are often developed with members of the team working from the London office in a regular fashion
  • A balance of dealing with factual content, relationships and the coordination of the central process is established. Social aspects such as a shared social context, a feeling of trust and a human interest in each other need are balanced against the more process orientated aspects such as the planning of work and the scheduling of activities to maximise the overall performance of the group.
  • Post project support, maintenance, and further development is executed by Ad Finem’s six strong team of developers. The Virtual Teams concept allows the company to extend our skills to large involved projects.

Revisiting old projects; Customer Support Portal for Anite PLC

Looking back at some of Ad Finem’s older projects I came across one of our early “milestone” projects. When Anite first contacted me I didn’t think much of the lead until I arrived at their offices. I found that although relatively unknown to the public, Anite was a major behind-the-scenes player in the technology world. Anite themselves were developers, but had done a poor job of developing their own support portal. It was a case of the cobbler’s shoes. Anite’s developers were busy with developing software for their clients, and had neglected their own portal. It was easier and cheaper for them to engage an outside company to do the work. Along came Ad Finem.

Anite is a publicly listed supplier of mobile technology; developing hardware for Sony Ericsson and other major mobile technology brands. The technology developed by Anite is up to three generations ahead of what’s currently available on the consumer market.

The project requirement was to develop a customer support portal for Anite’s clients which integrated with Anite’s internal systems and those of Anite’s suppliers. Some of Anite’s supplier did not provide a dedicated integration facility, however Ad Finem successfully developed alternative strategies to obtain the required data.

Functionality included:

  • Support request management
  • Asset management and inventory
  • Support contract  and warranty management
  • Facility to book user services
  • Software update archive
  • Full customer archive

Current project status: Project was a one off build that is now maintained by Anite themselves.
